Headquartered in Liverpool, Royal Liver has launched a website to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the world-famous Royal Liver Building’s foundation stone being laid.
Chief Executive, Steve Burnett, said: “We are very proud of our history and it is made extra special because we can celebrate the birth of the Royal Liver Building – a Liverpool icon – during the city’s year as European Capital of Culture.”
Royal Liver was founded in Liverpool in 1850 and it has forged strong links with the city over the past 158 years. “That is why the website looks at more than our building,” explained Steve. “It focuses on our entire history, right from the very beginning.”
In the ‘very beginning’, Royal Liver was founded as the Liverpool Liver Burial Society by a group of local men in a public house. Its aim was to provide a burial fund during what was a time of severe hardship for many in the city.
As Liverpool grew, so did Royal Liver. Steve said: “Our history is inextricably linked to the evolution of the city and I think that is why we have such iconic status here; we have both developed together – through the good times and the bad – to where we are today, proud leaders and innovators.”
The website is designed for everyone; from local schoolchildren in Liverpool to architectural historians around the world.
“We’ve made it as accessible as possible,” said Steve. “There is a wealth of information there and we’ve presented it in a way that is both easy to understand yet very detailed.”
